Watch Here - https://youtu.be/Bn8aV9xNXls Sammy Watkins was part of the 2019 Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. That allowed him to share the field with Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs hoisted up the Lombardi trophy. Now Watkins walks the halls of Lombardi with another all-time great at quarterback. When asked to compare Aaron Rodgers to Patrick Mahomes, Watkins had this to say: "I've been with both of them, and I'm gonna be honest, I think Pat (Mahomes) is unbelievably good, but A-Rod is on a whole different level," he said in July. "He makes me calm just to be in the huddle with him. The Green Bay Packers receiver was pretty definitive in his ranking of Rodgers over Mahomes. This is the second wide receiver to tout their new quarterbacks ability over Mahomes. Tyreek Hill has given glowing reviews of Tua Tagovailoa since being traded to the Miami Dolphins. Hill called Tua the most accurate quarterback he had ever played with. Which would mean that Tua has a leg up on Mahomes in that department according to Hill. Kyle & Ju-Ju in this segment discuss the trend of former Chiefs wide receivers praising their new QB at the expense of Patrick Mahomes. #PatrickMahomes #AaronRodgers #Chiefs
julian martinez: [00:00:13] I'm kind of surprised you're not cradling the Mahomes jersey right now, after all the disrespect that he is getting from his former wide receivers. How can you believe this comment that came out today from Sammy Watkins, who was on the championship squad for the Kansas City Chiefs? Patrick Mahomes is incredibly good, but A-Rod is on a whole other level. Sammy Watkins signed cosign by Tyreek Hill, who said that Tua was the most accurate quarterback that he has played with in his career. That's two wide receivers in the same off season that kind of had a little shade. I don't know if it was direct shade, but it certainly was shade at the great Patrick Mahomes. This is going to catch you off guard that this is a weird trend that seems to be developing this offseason. [00:01:05][52.1] kyle ledbetter: [00:01:07] I don't think so because I can always write it down as like, of course these players are, you know, talking about the quarterback that they really like now. I think that the Sammy Watkins story this week has been a byproduct of the Tyreek Hill storyline this off season, where Tyreek Hill has said repeatedly, like, Oh yeah, two is way more accurate than Patrick Mahomes, or I'm way more happy to have two than Patrick Mahomes. And Two and nine has kind of like ran with this storyline and dominated the headlines. [00:01:36][28.9] julian martinez: [00:01:36] A shout out to you too anon. [00:01:37][1.1] kyle ledbetter: [00:01:38] We know yeah to it. Not really likes our videos. [00:01:40][1.9] julian martinez: [00:01:41] For some reason I don't. I don't know what it is. I'm not questioning it to a not shout out to you things fans. Yeah, right, right. [00:01:47][6.6] kyle ledbetter: [00:01:48] I agree with that. I also will point out, just as a fun side note, there's a 2020 Bleacher Report story that was written by Tyler Dunn on Sammy Watkins. And it is still to this day, like the most interesting thing I've ever heard, like Sammy Watkins and has studied astrology. And basically, like he was getting drunk every night in Buffalo when he was there. And when he left, he, like locked himself in his house for five months and just, like, studied the universe. Right. Since Watkins is really interested. [00:02:16][28.3] julian martinez: [00:02:17] Are you talking about the Lizard King, Sammy Watkins? [00:02:19][1.9] kyle ledbetter: [00:02:20] Yes, I'm talking about that. Sammy Watkins. The chaotic, crazy Sammy Watkins, who again, I just I could talk for 10 minutes about that, but that's just the synopsis of it. So Sammy Watkins, super interesting. Now for Patrick Mahomes, all of this is just off season talk and it's a byproduct of Tyreek Hill. [00:02:38][17.8] julian martinez: [00:02:39] I feel as though it makes sense actually thinking about Sammy Watkins beliefs and realizing he's in the same locker room as Aaron Rodgers, who has been touting his ayahuasca trip this offseason. It sounds like they can actually bond when he talks about being on a whole other level. He might legitimately mean that. He means that Aaron Rodgers is on a whole other level, freed his mind, put himself in another dimension, another plane of existence. That's what Sammy Watkins is probably referring to, right? Not that Aaron Rodgers is more talented than Patrick Mahomes, because that can be right from the two time reigning MVP. Now, that's the interesting question that I think a lot of people are asking when they look at this story. Is it true? Is Aaron Rodgers that much better or that significantly better than Patrick Mahomes? What say you, Kyle? [00:03:27][48.4] kyle ledbetter: [00:03:29] It's interesting because I think that the Aaron Rodgers to Patrick Mahomes point is an interesting conversation. I know that we as we as sports media people can't be trusted with having a quarterback debate because it instinctively becomes who is better, Rodgers or Mahomes, when the answer is, they are both the two greatest quarterbacks to ever pick up a football statistically, and one one might be better than the other. So you're a. [00:03:54][24.9] julian martinez: [00:03:54] Cop? [00:03:54][0.0] kyle ledbetter: [00:03:55] Yeah. No, sorry. I'm not going to do the whole sports media conversation around this Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers situation. But that the part that I find more interesting is the Mahomes and to a thing because obviously there's no comparison between the two. We know what to a ton of Alloa is not. We know it. We don't know what he is, but we know what he's not. Even with the terrible offensive line and the Dolphins having that weird stretch run last year and him being hurt. We would have seen something at this point that says he's Justin Herbert or he's too or he's Patrick Mahomes or he's going to be one of the. It's just interesting that Tyreek Hill is so vocal about it and that people have ran so much about it, so much so that I think there's been more media coverage around Tyreek Hill's Praise of Two and Mike McDaniels Praise of two. Then there's been about like the Dolphins almost having Tom Brady this offseason and it's kind of weird that that conversation has sparked. And obviously the flipside of that is massive praise for to a must mean disrespect for Patrick Mahomes because it can never just be one thing or the other. It has to be both. It has to be disrespect for Patrick Mahomes as well. [00:05:06][70.5] julian martinez: [00:05:07] I can agree that you can praise your girlfriend without tearing down your ex, but it is interesting to think about the point of comparing the two quarterbacks. I'll go back to the Aaron Rodgers Patrick Mahomes comparison just to kind of get an idea of maybe what Sammy Watkins is talking about, like, why does he make it so to define that line? Okay. So how do we compare these two? So let's look at Aaron Rodgers last two MVP years. So Aaron Rodgers in those seasons respectively, 4115 yards last season in 2021, 37 touchdowns, four picks, 111.9 passer rating in 2020, 70% completion percentage, one yard shy of 4300 yards, 48 touchdowns, five picks, 121.5 rated Patrick Mahomes in those two years. And there was some injuries mixed in. But in 2021, he threw four more passing yards. 4839 had a worse completion percentage in terms of touchdowns, dead, even deadlocked together, interceptions that were a big problem for Mahomes relative to Rodgers. And some will say that Rodgers plays it too conservative with the ball sometimes, and that costs his team. Whereas Patrick Mahomes is known clearly as more of a gunslinger 13 picks in total, 98.5 rating. So the rating is a big dividing line in 2021 in terms of 2020, comparing there to statistics, 4700 yards. So not that far away from the 2021 season totals in 2020, 66.3 completion percentage, 38 touchdowns, which was ten less than Rodgers. Again, you have to mix in some injuries here, six interceptions. So he had less interceptions, less turnovers in 2020 and 108 rating. So the last two years, Rodgers has really separated in the categories of turnovers, less turnovers, more efficient with the football in terms of adding in the completion percentages, touchdowns, which sometimes year to year could be a little bit of a fluky stat. Aaron Rodgers, at least in 2020, was far and away above. Patrick Mahomes Again, you have to factor in the missed time. I would say Patrick Mahomes is more of an ad libber. He's he's one of the most talented when it comes to ad libbing in the game. Aaron Rodgers has a little bit of ad lib qualities to him as well, but not nearly to the same effect because he's not quite as mobile early career Aaron Rodgers was, but current iteration of Aaron Rodgers not as mobile. I feel like Aaron Rodgers fits better within his scheme right now. Ever since he learned the floor Shanahan McVay type offense, he's flourished in it. Patrick Mahomes Sometimes at points, he loves Andy Reid offense, but he sometimes can overcome it with his natural arm talent. [00:08:04][177.0] kyle ledbetter: [00:08:04] Certainly different quarterbacks. And I will add the other stat to all those stats you listed, which is the simpler one, and usually I'm the one who loves going to all the fun stats and QB and yards and things like that. But I will just do that each one of 2021 and 2020, both seasons. Rodgers finished first in MVP. Patrick Mahomes finished third in MVP. Both of those seasons. Now, in fairness, there was a different second place, both seasons. 2020, it was Josh Allen, 2021 it was Tom Brady. But you know, same point like they are the two they're the games are certainly different between the two. [00:08:36][31.9] julian martinez: [00:08:37] I'll throw this in there. I thought Aaron Rodgers should have won last year's MVP. Throwing the MVP says. [00:08:41][4.7] kyle ledbetter: [00:08:42] Neither should Tom Brady. [00:08:42][0.7] julian martinez: [00:08:43] I thought it was Tom Brady. I'm sorry. I thought as Tom Brady last year in. [00:08:47][3.6] kyle ledbetter: [00:08:47] Saying, you know, the value. [00:08:48][1.1] julian martinez: [00:08:48] Is passing touchdowns, passing yards. That's that's, you know. [00:08:53][4.9] kyle ledbetter: [00:08:54] Which is. Okay, I don't I don't I can't. Anyways, the Patrick Mahomes point is really interesting because like you said, they play very different games. And as I'm not going to say vanilla, let's say that the Matt LaFleur offense is chocolate. It's not as kooky and creative as it could be. TAYLOR Well, to what Aaron Rodgers does is a quarterback, which is. Aaron Rodgers is short quick passes. Aaron Rodgers is two and a half seconds or less get out the football Aaron Rodgers is use the running backs as receivers type of guy and the chiefs do some of that stuff but obviously the Chiefs offense is built on Patrick Mahomes his ability to, one, be a mobile quarterback and make plays last five, six, 7 seconds long in order to give Tyreek Hill openings and give Travis Kelce openings and give Mecole Hardman and Sammy Watkins three games a year. Give those guys openings. [00:09:48][54.1] julian martinez: [00:09:48] I'll put it to you this way. If you were a defensive coordinator, who would you like to see, Aaron Rodgers or Patrick Mahomes? [00:09:55][6.9] kyle ledbetter: [00:09:57] Um, I would probably least like to see Aaron Rodgers because Aaron Rodgers is just a lot harder to gameplan against. Like his game is built on extreme accuracy and Aaron Rodgers game is built on precision passing where your defensive linemen ized because you just can't physically get to the quarterback fast enough to make an effort to change a play like that. And so. [00:10:24][27.3] julian martinez: [00:10:24] What say in that respect is referencing. [00:10:25][1.2] kyle ledbetter: [00:10:27] Perhaps that's what Tim Watkins is referencing. Now, I think that the better quarterback is Patrick Mahomes to game plan against one or the other is more difficult because Patrick Mahomes we saw last season you can say we're going to deny the deep ball you're going to have to throw to the middle. And Patrick Mahomes will, as all Patrick Mahomes has to do is adjust his play and it changes the game a little bit. Like if he takes what's been given to him, the Chiefs offense is still totally unstoppable. It's just it denies the, you know, Patrick Mahomes rolls to his left, rolls to his right. And now the plays lasted six, 7 seconds long and no one can possibly cover Travis Kelce or Tyreek Hill for six or 7 seconds. [00:11:07][40.3] julian martinez: [00:11:08] And this is no fault of Mahomes because any quarterback would kill for this situation. But I think a lot of what this debate boils down to in terms of how these quarterbacks will rank historically or how they rank right now, historically is always Aaron Rodgers. We've seen so many different iterations throughout the years in him succeed with so many different talented pieces, whereas we still need to figure out what Mahomes is going to be post Tyree, he'll post Travis Kelce, post Andy Reid whenever the time comes. Aaron Rodgers has flourished in multiple systems with Mike McCarthy and now with the floor. He's had multiple number one wide receivers over the course of his career, whether that be a Donald driver, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson or Devante Adams and who knows who's going to be the guy this year. So in terms of Career Resumé, because we have seen Aaron Rodgers be able to flourish throughout the years with different settings, different you are different types of adversity. Yes. We still have to see kind of Patrick Mahomes face adversity in his career and maybe that's coming this year. Maybe we thought we thought kind of last year that he was dealing with adversity when they had that odd stretch where just didn't seem like anything was really working. [00:12:23][75.3] kyle ledbetter: [00:12:24] Other people and I'm not going to say I deserve protection because I said they were going to be fine. [00:12:28][4.6] julian martinez: [00:12:29] But you have a game Monday Night Football against the New York Giants and you beat them by maybe a touchdown or touchdown or whatever it. And I think that's when people start hitting that red alarm button and it's like, you bitch. [00:12:42][13.8] kyle ledbetter: [00:12:43] And you know what? The Kansas City Chiefs went eight and one after that happened that that Monday night game, they went eight and one and outscored opponents. But maybe that's. [00:12:50][7.3] julian martinez: [00:12:50] Because maybe that's because andy reid big red push that big red button after that game and said, guys, we got to get our shit together. We can't literally be beating the Giants by a score. This is where we have to hit that red alarm. And it worked all the way up until the playoffs where you have a 21 point lead against the lowly Cincinnati Bengals probably didn't need to be there. And then chaos happens. And maybe that's another thing, too. Oh, honestly. And that's maybe something that Patrick Mahomes does need to clean up somewhat. The. I hate to say it so harshly, but dumbness. Like the scramble roll back sack that happened against the Bengals. That was horrific. And I think Patrick Mahomes will agree that that was horrific. Aaron Rodgers doesn't do that. Aaron Rodgers he has the opposite problem. Sometimes he goes too conservative with the ball. They kind of move in different directions. But I guess if you're asking for what gets you respect with the guys, sometimes not making the ESPN top ten lowlights is something that gets a little bit more among the locker room because people won't kill and leave them to conservative. [00:14:00][69.6] kyle ledbetter: [00:14:01] And perhaps that's the same point that Sammy Watkins was talking about, which to close out the segment, I would like to read a couple of my favorite quotes from the Sammy Watkins story, because it's incredible. I quote, Dreams are not merely dreams. No, Watkins believes we all move through an astral realm in which you can manifest outcomes into the physical world. Like the past AFC Championship game. Remember, that was in 2020. He hears voices that tell him when danger's near. He knows for certain that world words, cast spells and death. Watkins isn't afraid of death. Not when you know you've probably died so many times, he says. And you're still here. You just keep coming back. He's also said that, you know, he's researched religious stories of the beginning of mankind and took it a bit too far. There was Adam. Okay, you've got it. But the serpent now, the serpent was not just a snake. All things we think are good aren't good. All of the things we think are bad aren't bad. God could be Satan. Jesus could be Lucifer. Watkins started to feel a dragon like snake, like presence around him. And then when he took it for a drive, he saw something that petrified him all the way to this day. That is some of the again, read this story. It's awesome. I read it two years ago and it has still stuck with me ever since. Sammy Watkins is such an interesting dude. [00:15:20][79.4] julian martinez: [00:15:22] The Lizard King, Sammy Watkins lives on. Thank you for the content today, bro. Anyway, guys, go ahead and drop below in the comments. Yes. Watch Here - https://youtu.be/uVGWu2fbGXo Jimmy Garoppolo will be returning to the San Francisco 49ers. Per Adam Shefter: "Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers agreed to a restructured one-year contract that will keep the QB in San Francisco this season, per sources. The contract contains no-trade and no-tag clauses, assuring Garoppolo will remain in SF this season and have the freedom to leave in 2023. Comp update: Jimmy Garoppolo’s one-year restructured deal is worth $6.5 million in base, fully guaranteed, per sources. He has another total of $500k in roster bonuses. He also has playtime bonuses that can boost it another nearly $9M. So, one year, $7M, up to just shy of $16M. Jimmy Garoppolo’s no-trade clause just means that if any team wanted to trade for him, it would have to include him in the conversation and get his and the 49ers’ consent. So the no-trade clause allows Garoppolo and the 49ers to have 10 more weeks to see if a proper suitor arises" Does the Garoppolo return signal a bad omen for Trey Lance taking control of the team? San Francisco 49ers fan Ju-Ju discusses whether this move is a good or bad thing for the team in 2022. #49ers #JimmyGaroppolo #sanfrancisco49ers
Julian Martinez: [00:00:12] Well, guys, it's been a long off season of Jimmy Garoppolo rumors. And finally, we reach a conclusion. The Niners have agreed to a restructured contract with Jimmy G to keep him on the roster in 2023. This is per Adam Schefter. So I'm just to read off the specifics of the deal. Jimmy Garoppolo and the 40 niners agreed to a restructured one year contract that will keep the quarterback in San Francisco this season. Per sources, the contract contains a no trade clause and a no tag clause, assuring Jimmy Garoppolo will remain in San Francisco this season and have the freedom to leave in 2023. He goes on to say Comp update Jimmy Garoppolo's one year restructured deal is worth $6.5 million in baseball guarantee per sources. He has another total of 500 K in roster bonuses. He also has play time bonuses that can boost it another nearly 9 million. So one year 7 million up to just shy of 16 million. So this makes Jimmy Garoppolo the highest paid backup quarterback in the NFL. And I think this is an absolute win for the San Francisco 49ers. How many other teams can say they have a backup quarterback that if push came to shove, can lead them to an AFC championship game, can lead them to a Super Bowl? I know Jimmy Garoppolo has been to two of the last three Super Bowls. And while some think he's been an impediment on the Niners roster, I think the simple answer to that is look at the win loss ratio when he is not there. With that said, I do hope the Trey Lance is an improvement on Jimmy Garoppolo from a abilities standpoint. I'm hoping that Trey Lance can one day ascend and be a top five quarterback akin to a Josh Allen, a Patrick Mahomes, an Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady. He needs to be in that year to live up to his top three draft pick, Jimmy Garoppolo. What he is, he's ranged anywhere from being a top 15 to top 20 quarterback. And when he's been in that top 15 where he's performed up to that ability, sometimes I'll even give you a top ten performance. The Niners win a lot of football games and not many teams can say they have that on the roster. Now I understand the weird locker room dynamic it poses for Trey Lance as we try to progress into the 2022 NFL season, but is any weirder than what they faced last year? Is it that much more dramatic than what the locker room situation was a year ago when Trey Lance was coming in after the Niners had traded three draft picks to grab him? The Niners have said Trey Lance is the guy. And yes, I know that that kind of undermines that notion. But Trey Lance is going to get the first crack at this. If Trey Lance plays up to the ability that we've been presented that we believe that he has, then he should have no reason to fear Jimmy Garoppolo. But if he does struggle. If he gets injured. It's nice to know that the Niners could throw in a guy that threw for 3800 passing yards last year that for the majority of his career has a 2 to 1 touchdown interception ratio that has that throw to Deebo Samuel and the week 18 play in game in his back pocket. Now I know sometimes Jimmy Garoppolo isn't always pretty I know sometimes that could be a mess. But you're not asking him to play significant time for you. That's not the expectation here. You're expecting him to be available if called on, if the unthinkable happens, if an injury happens and I'll even say this, it's possible that he doesn't even perform for the 40 Niners this year, not just because Trey Lance plays up to his ability. But even though Adam Schefter noted that there is a no trade clause in his contract, if you told me that a contending team needed a quarterback this year due to some, as I mentioned, unthinkable injury you're in. Tell me they're not going to give you the San Francisco 40 niners that call and ask about jimmy garoppolo. The reason it was so hard to trade Jimmy Garoppolo in the off season was because of that $25 million contract. That's not an issue anymore. Now you have a $7 million contract with incentives. A team that's trying to push towards the playoffs but just had their starter go down with the injury would be much more willing to take on that contract than the 25 million. Because for as much as I love Jimmy Garoppolo and as much as I respect the talent of Jimmy Garoppolo, $25 million for the level of player that Jimmy is is a lot to take on. It's a very jarring contract for a lot of teams that are questioning how they're going to spend their money. If you told me, was that $18 million quarterback, you probably would've been moved around the draft. But that's just not the way the cookie crumbled in that situation. This just opens up so many possibilities for the Niners, whether he's on the roster, whether he plays for them, whether they have the opportunity to trade them during the season. And I just don't see how I could look at this and think that this is a loss for them in any other way. I don't see how any San Francisco 49ers fan or anyone who cheers for the Niners can look at this deal and think it's a bad deal because the only hangup on having Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster in my mind was the money. That's not the issue anymore. We restructured and Jimmy Garoppolo can be the backup quarterback for this team and he's mature enough more that we saw that he was mature enough to be the backup quarterback behind Tom Brady. We saw that he was mature enough to get through that quarterback competition and even though his wasn't much of a competition last year, so I don't see him having any qualms about this current situation. He has the support of the locker room if he does need a play, and I think that's a very powerful thing. The only thing that I question is how much leashes Kyle Shanahan going to give trey lance if the niners do start off slow. If I told you the niners were two and three, two and four struggling a little bit on offense, it's going to be hard to tell guys like George Kittle, Nick Bosa, how you shake. Deebo Samuel did not press the Jimmy Garoppolo button. That's going to be something to monitor. But again, I hope Trey Lance doesn't make us think about it. I hope Trey Lance lives up to being a top three pick. We don't have to think about it much other than if injury should strike, which as a 49%. I will tell you, injury has hit our team who lot I've seen to make games with Nick Mullens. C.J. battered this. This is an ideal situation if you don't me something bad happened to Trey. At least we can just slide in Garoppolo. I think that's a winning situation for the Niners, especially with their Super Bowl caliber roster that they do have. And we guys, maybe I'm wrong about this whole situation. Maybe you think this was a bad deal for the 49ers. Maybe you think they should've just cleared house and got rid of Jimmy Garoppolo to save themselves any unneeded drama. Drop below in the comments. If that's how you're feeling. If feel like me, I also want to hear him tighten. It's not cut your support. [00:00:12][0.0] Watch Here - https://youtu.be/msG6FkPWguY Speaker 1: [00:00:12] This just in today. Lamar Jackson has been offered more money than Kyler Murray per Jay Glazer, but that doesn't mean a contract extension has gotten done. Lamar Jackson The Ravens still haven't agreed to a contract as Lamar is seeking to only be the third player in NFL history to receive a fully guaranteed contract. Understandable. Both sides. Why? Both sides would want a fully guaranteed contract or a non fully guaranteed contract. There isn't a ton of precedent for it in the league and still an anomaly that the two examples that we have are of course a very unique situation with John Watson and Kirk Cousins, who is one of the biggest anomalies in the league just by his pure existence. Darian When you hear that the Ravens and Lamar haven't come to terms on an agreement, do you think the Ravens should bend his whims in terms of fully guaranteed, or do you think that they have reason to be hesitant to offer it? [00:01:04][51.3]
Speaker 2: [00:01:04] I think Lamar Jackson should not play this season until he gets his contract numbers. I'm to be completely honest, because you got to you got to secure your future, especially the way he plays. You know, he use a lot of his legs and he does take hits when he uses his legs. So you got to you got to secure the bag when it comes to Lamar Jackson. But this is the problem with the Ravens at the quarterback position, the highest I ever seen the Ravens play for quarterback with Joe Flacco after this. If you look at all the quarterbacks that came through, the Baltimore Ravens were on cheap contracts. You never seen a fully guaranteed quarterback get signed by the Baltimore Ravens. They'll go everywhere else. Only positions cornerback wide, not even wide receiver, running backs, offensive line. But they never did a fully a real full guarantee contract for a Baltimore Ravens quarterback. And this is why Lamar Jackson is going public once to hold out. The guy's a former MVP. If you 39 interceptions. I think the 39 touchdowns I'm sorry, touchdowns. Not interceptions, 39 touchdowns. He didn't even have a double digit interception that year. Understanding that the last couple of years he was hurt, I understand that. But he's still a dynamic player. And you don't want to risk Dad going off of a rookie contract that, you know, Kyler Murray is not even better than Lamar Jackson, in my opinion. So if you want to pay that back to somebody, it got to be Lamar Jackson. And I think he deserves it. Just the Ravens are being cheap as an organization and they don't want a paid star. [00:02:41][96.6] Speaker 1: [00:02:42] Yeah. But on one hand, they're offering him the second highest paid contract in the NFL. So they are, in theory, paying him. Now, the question is over this term guaranteed. Technically, it could all be guaranteed. If he plays up to his ability. He's the superstar we expect him to be remains healthy short of a catastrophic injury, which honestly, in terms of here's here's my thing. How many devastating injuries do we see in the NFL on a yearly basis at the quarterback position anymore? Yes, we had Alex Smith a couple of years ago, but isn't that more of a rarity? I mean, even guys who tear their ACL come back the next year, guys who tear their Achilles come back the next year. Dak, you know, obviously got his contract after his injury. So. [00:03:23][41.0] Speaker 2: [00:03:24] Right. [00:03:24][0.0] Speaker 1: [00:03:24] I don't think that even if Lamar, let's say this, he goes out there week one this year carries his ACL. I don't think teams aren't going to be willing to pay him next year or he's not he's going to be at risk of not playing out the rest of his contract. Now I it's comes into that territory, too, with obviously Lamar, one of his biggest strength is his athleticism. And if he does suffer injury, will that go away without fail? Well, that's what I'm hoping to Lamar. And I think at one point he'll realize this, too. He needs to develop a second gear as a quarterback because no matter how athletic you are, that's that's faith, no matter who you are. Like once he hit that 30 year old mark, that it's tough to be like athletic quarterback and continue to age. Well at the position even I'm sure Josh Allen at one point to another similar quarterback is going to have to realize that and kind of start changing his philosophy not take as many hits to his body. With Ben Roethlisberger back in the day, Big Ben took a hit after hit after hit. He just age like milk. Cam Newton. Hey, Cam Newton. See, I think that Lamar, if he does sign this contract, even without the full guaranteed, I still think he'll make most of, if not all of the money from the contract. So I don't really have a fear of that. So maybe that's why I'm pretty neutral on the term of guaranteed. But I do think that it behooves the NFL to not have guaranteed contracts just game handed like candy, because it's a tough sport and things happen. And when it comes to baseball, I hate that they had fully guaranteed contracts, mostly because it means the players who shouldn't be in the league kind of hang around the league for years or hang around on rosters for years. And maybe not just a for like Lamar Jackson, but I just think in general, it's a bad business for the NFL to hand out fully guaranteed contracts. [00:05:11][106.4] Speaker 3: [00:05:12] Yeah, I understand the point there. And the NFL doesn't hand out guaranteed contracts because they can. It's just kind of how they've been negotiating for years. And only in the cases of Kirk Cousins being able to withstand the franchise tag and hitting free agency or the sexual predator getting traded to the Browns. Has there been a case where circumstances were just right now? Usually the guarantees are around like 75 to 80% now. So what we're talking about is, again, a few tens of millions of dollars and that being guaranteed versus him having to make a roster in order to guarantee those, which I assume for the next seven years, Lamar Jackson isn't in jeopardy of not making a roster. What's difficult about the situation is, like you said last year, I would argue that Lamar Jackson could blow out his knee and would still teams would line up for a fully guaranteed contract. I feel less confident than I did last year and yet still feel the case that Lamar Jackson will still get a gigantic contract larger than Kyler Murray, even if he gets hurt. The difference there is one Lamar Jackson is going to I know the whole thing about Lamar taking hits because he runs is a big deal. But Lamar doesn't really ever take hits and the quarterback position is super protected. He's yes, he got hurt at the end of last year and so did Patrick Mahomes in a regular season game against the Broncos. And he missed about the same amount of time. Like the whole thing about Lamar, like taking too many hits is a little overblown in my opinion. So I think that he'll play out whatever the contract is, he'll get another big one. Obviously he's representing himself, which is a big part of shooting for the guaranteed contract. I think if an agent were advising him and he's going to get $235 million regardless of the guarantees, I think an agent might advise him to sign it just because other quarterbacks who also have agents have signed those deals. I don't know if that's like a causation correlation thing. I just am interested by the fact that what was what exactly was the hold up in the contract like? We know exactly what type of contract he's going to get. We know what the language is going to be in the deal. It's going to be $3 million more than Kyler Murray, which was $100,000 more than Deshaun Watson, which was $2 million more than Josh Allen. Like it. It's a very strategic pattern of contracts. It's why I was surprised that they hadn't signed the deal yet. And now I guess we kind of know the reason why. [00:07:41][149.2] Speaker 1: [00:07:42] I'll have your name reporting on how many years would be on this proposed contract. [00:07:45][2.9] Speaker 3: [00:07:46] I don't have the exclusive report like I had with Kyler Murray. No, I had the Kyler Murray News two weeks beforehand just because I had the Cardinals podcast and stuff. [00:07:56][9.6] Speaker 1: [00:07:56] But I guess why I asked this was because like, I'm curious if. If it was a shorter contract, then I think it might be okay to sign that guarantee, that fully guaranteed contract for the Ravens. If you told me it was like because go back to Kirk Cousins when he signed his full guaranteed contract I believe was a three year deal. [00:08:14][17.8] Speaker 3: [00:08:15] Mhm. [00:08:15][0.0] Speaker 2: [00:08:15] Yeah it was, it was a three year deal. [00:08:17][1.6] Speaker 1: [00:08:18] A three year deal. Fully guaranteed. I might be more comfortable doing that but I don't want to fully guarantee a five year, a six year, a ten year deal. That's when I think that the Ravens will wash their mind in terms of handing out this contract. [00:08:31][13.6] Speaker 2: [00:08:33] I mean, we want to keep it in the middle. I say just give them four years. [00:08:35][2.5] Speaker 1: [00:08:36] Four years, fully guaranteed. Let's see. So the baseline is what, like 40 million per year? [00:08:42][6.4] Speaker 3: [00:08:43] Kyler Murray is getting 46, so probably about 47 to 50, probably. If it's if it's a four year contract, think like the Aaron Rodgers deal, which was four years, 200 million. [00:08:52][9.4] Speaker 1: [00:08:53] Okay. So, yeah, we're talking four years, 200 million fully guaranteed for Lamar Jackson. And think about the Ravens team contract. They've built a nice team around Lamar and what he does. Well, when you think about the offensive line, how it's built them drafting a center this year strong running game with J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. They can make it work on a short term basis. I think that might be a compromise that if I'm Lamar, I'm negotiating this, I might seek Nick. Hey, I want to if that's really the important thing to me, having that fully guaranteed contract, then maybe I could seek it on short term basis. And hey, in three years, four years, maybe we could reevaluate and I could become the highest paid quarterback once again if I play up to my abilities. Yeah. [00:09:37][44.3] Speaker 3: [00:09:39] And we know from Jay Glazer that he's gotten offered more money than Kyler Murray, which makes me think that it's a five year contract, just like Kilar's probably like 6 to $10 million total more so like $2 million more than that because again, like Kilar's was 2 million more than Deshaun, which was 2 million more than Josh Allen, which was 2 million more than Patrick Mahomes. And that's kind of the layering of those five year contracts. So I'm guessing it's a five year, $240 Million fully guaranteed contract, which might be part of the hang up for why he hasn't signed the deal yet. [00:10:14][35.5] Speaker 1: [00:10:15] I think it's kind of like what Darian was saying to the Ravens, how they tend to operate. They didn't hand Flacco his contract until after he won the Super Bowl. Right. They're a very results oriented team and they're a well-run team. For what it's worth. I mean, for the last entirety of my life, the Ravens have been a relevant franchise. So I'll give it to them. They they make shrewd business moves. And this is where it kind of gets tough when a shrewd organization comes against a superstar player who's seeking something that is a rarity in the sport. So I don't know who's going to win out exactly. I think Lamar, at the end of the day, is still going to become a very rich man here shortly. It's just a matter of is he going to again staple himself in NFL? History is only the third guaranteed contract. I actually let's throw this before we close it out here. What are the odds he gets this thing for? Guaranteed. [00:11:03][48.2] Speaker 2: [00:11:04] Either he going to have to do it before we win, but I don't see it happening. Yeah, I think he's going to sit out there. He's going to sit out like three or four. [00:11:11][7.2] Speaker 1: [00:11:12] I don't think he's gonna sit out. I think I think the thing about Lamar, for me personally, I just think he has such a high football character for whatever that's worth, that I don't see him as a sit out type player. [00:11:21][8.9] Speaker 2: [00:11:21] Oh, no. I think he wants to protect his future. You know, you don't want to get hurt. [00:11:25][3.7] Speaker 1: [00:11:26] Yeah, but that could create some bad blood with some guys. I mean, look at even like Le'Veon Bell like that created the whole thing. You should be worrying about other people's money, but players on his own team start resenting after that. [00:11:36][10.6] Speaker 3: [00:11:37] Well, Le'Veon Bell never stepped back into that locker room after it all happened, because, remember, he's. [00:11:41][4.1] Speaker 2: [00:11:41] Got all these different. [00:11:42][1.1] Speaker 1: [00:11:43] Issues that may have been a big part of it to get. Yeah. Hey, if he Lamar hits the open market like if his contract expires obviously be wanted by pretty much all 25 teams I would say quite 32. [00:11:56][13.8] Speaker 3: [00:11:57] There's all all but for all but 14. [00:12:00][3.1] Speaker 1: [00:12:02] All but four teams, maybe five or six, depending on how much going will. [00:12:05][3.5] Speaker 2: [00:12:05] Be involved because no matter what person get released, no matter what quarterback get released, the Raiders got some ties to it. Someway, somehow. [00:12:11][6.1] Speaker 1: [00:12:12] Can we get Dana White to give Lamar call? Can we make that happen? All right. All right, guys. Well, anyway, let us know, what do you think's going to happen with this Lamar situation? Do you think he does get the third fully guaranteed contract in NFL history dropped below in the comments? [00:12:12][0.0] [698.4] Watch Here - https://youtu.be/95TjqoilaOk Speaker 1: [00:00:12] Well, it was definitely interesting weekend for Raiders fans, NFL fans, Buccaneers fans. A whole lot of fan bases were affected by one that Dana White on a Gronk cast. [00:00:21][9.2]
Unidentified: [00:00:22] I work to put that deal together for Brady and Gronk to come to the Raiders and it was almost a done deal. And at the last minute Gruden blew the deal up. [00:00:37][14.3] Speaker 2: [00:00:38] And said that he didn't want them back and whoa, all hell broke loose, man. It was crazy. And and Brady was already looking at houses and it wasn't being said that to Gronk was coming. So Las Vegas would have had Brady and Gronk the year that the Bucs won the Super Bowl, except Gruden blew the deal up. [00:00:57][19.6] Speaker 3: [00:00:59] I'm not really a big fan of this topic, honestly. But hey, I mean, Tom Brady's buddy Tom Brady is Tom Brady. You know, you can't you can't deny that. But what do you do about that? [00:01:09][9.0] Speaker 1: [00:01:09] GRUDEN Also. [00:01:09][0.4] Speaker 3: [00:01:10] Here's a Derek Carr for Tom Brady which offers a lot is not that great anyway. [00:01:14][4.1] Speaker 1: [00:01:14] So so do you think that's why Gruden was so resistant to sign Brady when he was free agent Yeah. [00:01:19][5.2] Speaker 3: [00:01:20] Page number one. Jon Gruden in itself is already old, his offense is old, his defense is old. Why not go out to get an old quarterback? It makes sense. [00:01:30][9.9] Speaker 1: [00:01:32] What did you think when you first heard the comments? [00:01:33][1.3] Speaker 4: [00:01:35] Well, the first thing when I when I saw this was circulating the headlines over the weekend was that people really love these Tom Brady conspiracies so much. First it was, oh, my gosh, Tom Brady's going to the 40 Niners and oh, my gosh, what if Tom Brady were a Raider or oh, my gosh, what if Tom Brady had a secret back deal with the Miami Dolphins, where they were going to have Sean Payton retire and unretired as head coach then in Miami, but it only got blown up by a once in a generation racial discrimination lawsuit. Man, everyone loves these Tom Brady conspiracy theories so much they do. [00:02:06][31.7] Speaker 1: [00:02:07] But this isn't just a conspiracy theory, though. Gronk confirmed this wasn't just Dana White, it was also Matt Lombardi confirmed that this was an almost thing that happened. So what it. [00:02:18][10.8] Speaker 3: [00:02:18] Was import that's the question was why the trigger wasn't pulled in. [00:02:21][3.0] Speaker 1: [00:02:22] Well it seems like it is literally boiling down to Gruden and it my theory on it on why he would be so resistant to go about it would be obviously you're relinquishing team control when Tom Brady goes to your team it's something that the Bucs were much more willing to do. And obviously when Brady gets there, they're signing Leonard Fournette, signing Shady McCoy, they're signing Antonio Brown, they're trading up in the first round to draft the offensive line. A lot of that seemed like Tom Brady doing a little bit of GM manipulation behind the scenes. And maybe that was just something that Gruden and Mike Mayock at the time weren't willing to do. And I could understand why you would be resistant, but at the same time, I think you pull that trigger. I understand what you're saying about the age argument with Derek Carr, but bottom line, we don't know if Derek Carr is ever going to win a Super Bowl. I know what Tom Brady did a couple of years ago. He took the Buccaneers a franchise and he'd been in the playoffs in over a decade and won a Super Bowl. [00:03:18][56.1] Speaker 3: [00:03:18] So but this is the problem, though. This is the problem now. Okay. What's going on? Tom Brady comes into the Las Vegas Raiders. Jon Gruden, any given up his power? That's the only problem. Yeah, we know it. And that's what it means. Tom Brady, not win a Super Bowl in Las Vegas just because of that. Because Drew and don't know how to put weapons around their quarterbacks. If you look at the years that Derek Carr was here, name a real true number one receiver that he had besides Amari Cooper in Michael Crabtree. [00:03:48][29.3] Speaker 1: [00:03:49] Obviously. Martavis Bryant. Right. But that's at least worth a third round pick. We're not getting too high. [00:03:56][7.7] Speaker 3: [00:03:57] My best years was in Pittsburgh. We know that. [00:03:59][1.8] Speaker 1: [00:03:59] Kenny, some Tyrell Williams. [00:04:00][0.9] Speaker 4: [00:04:02] Hunter Renfroe. [00:04:02][0.4] Speaker 3: [00:04:04] Hudson River was not a number one. We know that. [00:04:05][1.6] Speaker 4: [00:04:06] He had more yards than Mike Evans last year and as many touchdowns as Stefon Diggs. Somehow. I still can't believe that's a real stat. [00:04:12][6.1] Speaker 3: [00:04:13] Yeah. And just imagine just imagine how it is now with, you know, with the whole Adams thing, how he's going to be even more open. [00:04:18][5.3] Speaker 1: [00:04:19] In that first round. You know, the Bucs obviously traded up the attrition worse I guess I was fairly was the Henry Ruggs tragedy. [00:04:27][7.6] Speaker 3: [00:04:28] Mm. I wasn't a big fan. I wasn't a big fan of drugs coming out. A lot of people don't know that. I wasn't a big fan of Rugs. I felt as though in that in that actual draft, it was more it was better receivers didn't have at that at that spot. [00:04:40][12.3] Speaker 4: [00:04:41] That included Jerry, Judy and Ceedee LAMB at the same time. [00:04:44][3.4] Speaker 1: [00:04:44] A little bit, but Ceedee. [00:04:45][1.0] Speaker 3: [00:04:46] LAMB And anything. [00:04:46][0.5] Speaker 1: [00:04:47] Jon Gruden with you know his ties to Al Davis a guy get speed speed speed raiders ball right and that's that's but I. [00:04:53][6.8] Speaker 3: [00:04:54] Don't want to say I don't want to say what I want to say a speed leap. I don't want to say that. [00:04:58][4.7] Speaker 1: [00:04:58] I see where you're going with it. I actually I understand we get I just think this is a miss. It would have been your inaugural season in Las Vegas. The greatest of all time quarterback is coming your way. But I'm looking at it through the benefit of hindsight as well. Obviously, we know that coming off that 2019 season, Brady was struggling. He was starring show His Age. I believe Kyle likes to point out that he had quite the same hubris. Mitch Trubisky that year. [00:05:25][26.6] Speaker 4: [00:05:26] Yes, yes. Same same QB as Mitchell Trubisky in 2019. That's correct. [00:05:30][4.2] Speaker 1: [00:05:31] So it's easy to look at that 2019 version that entered free agency and think to yourself that that was a diminishing quarterback that was on the open market. And then he goes to Tampa and just happens to win that Super Bowl in a little bit of an odd year. Obviously, no fans in the stands. The Buccaneers had a lot more had a bit of more ready made team than a lot of the other candidates. [00:05:53][22.1] Speaker 3: [00:05:54] So there was just a quarterback over. [00:05:55][1.1] Speaker 1: [00:05:56] Yeah, they were a quarterback away. When you have Jameis Winston who had the 30, 30 season, the season before and they were still seven and nine kind of on the outskirts of the playoffs, not completely incompetent. They go out there again and get a B, fix their offensive line and their defense with the way their defense was built. It was a ready made pretender. The other team that was talked about a lot in that offseason was going to be the Los Angeles Chargers. The Los Angeles Chargers were apparently really close on game. Tom Brady and if nothing else do. If the Raiders knew that the Chargers were in on the bidding, they probably should have made a little bit more of a diligent effort to try and avoid him from going in the division. Luckily for their benefit, it didn't end up happening. And obviously, again, Tom Brady goes to Tampa Bay, the story goes on, is told personally that offseason, I didn't even think he was leaving New England but I did have the Raiders is like my second choice. If he did go to another team. [00:06:46][49.8] Speaker 3: [00:06:47] I didn't have him even leaving New England either. But just imagine if Tom Brady did leave the season and Josh McDaniels was, you know, as our head coach right now, I think that might be a little bit more different. And Tom Brady might reconsider coming to the Las Vegas Raiders. But I think Tom Brady respects Derek Carr enough to know, like, okay, they have their quarterback and want to revive another Tampa Bay Buccaneers, revive another franchise that I did before with with the new well New England has was good back then but it wasn't as great they were good they not there wasn't that great at them but you know Tom Brady just showed no matter what team he goes on, he could turn it around as a quarterback. [00:07:27][39.9] Speaker 1: [00:07:27] I guess when free agency and 2025 heads or 2030 or however Brady decides to stretch this one out, maybe he'll live his dream on the next gronkowski. We'll find out. They're heading to Las Vegas. Kyle, any closing thoughts before we close this one? [00:07:43][15.7] Speaker 4: [00:07:44] I'm still stuck on the fact that this is like the leading headline on every sports radio topic today when the Miami Dolphins literally got fined for tampering with Tom Brady and had a plan, not tampering. [00:07:55][11.0] Speaker 1: [00:07:56] It's Dana White. He's announced it's not tampering. [00:07:58][2.5] Speaker 4: [00:07:59] It's just no one cares that the Dolphins had a secret backdoor deal to have Tom Brady and Sean Payton become their coach and quarterback. And now Sean Payton and Bruce Arians are out of jobs and Tom Brady seems pretty unhappy in Tampa Bay and no one wants to talk about that. [00:08:13][13.5] Speaker 1: [00:08:13] I think it's because we have the shop, because we have the quote from the shop and everyone's looking at Derek Carr. [00:08:20][7.1] Speaker 4: [00:08:20] How is the sound bite LeBron James's podcast a bigger deal than actually getting hit with tampering charges. [00:08:26][6.1] Speaker 3: [00:08:27] Tom Bradley in that 2025 in the 2024 season, you never know. You might be a part of that helmet you got on their desk there and with the 49 is you never know. I'm just saying. [00:08:38][10.7] Speaker 1: [00:08:39] Well, we've gone back and forth certainly on a Trey Lance topic or two. So we'll see. Let's I'm hoping for the best hoping that the third overall pick in last year's draft can live up to expectations. Lord knows that the quarterbacks in that draft haven't otherwise. But Darren otherwise. Thank you for joining us, man. I got where can people find you these days? I know you kind of went through a little bit of rebranding recently.
